Erhu originated in Tang Dynasty with over one thousand years of history; however, the development of the instruments has only started in the last one hundred years or so despite the fact that Erhu has a deep connection to Chinese traditional music.
The key feature of Erhu lies in its tonality which often been referred to as “music that connects to people’s heart and emotion”. It is very good at expressing the compassionate and sentimental quality in music and it is also good at the imitating other sounds as well as expressing the grand momentum.
The world famous conductor Seiji Ozawa was once moved to tears when he was listening to the famous Erhu music ‘The Moon reflected in the Spring’.
Gu Zheng‘s timbre is luxurious and rich and has more than 2500 year history. It is made of various strings and moveable bridge. The player often wears fingerpicks while plucking the instrument. Plucking is usually done with the right hand, vibrato and changes of picth are achieved by pressing the strings with the left hand. It is gorgeous to listen to and attractive to watch. For thousands of years Guqin has played an important role in Chinese music history. According to historical records, Xiao and Dizi existed at least 4000 years in China. The earliest material used to make Dizi and Xiao was from the bones of the wings of the big birds. Today it is made from bamboo.
Di was common name for both Dizi and Xiao. Later people separated the two by naming the one which play with vertical blowing position ' Xiao'.
The timbre of Dizi is clear and bright.
The timbre of Xiao is soft and elegant.
Banhu has a history of about 3 hundred years. In the family of Chinese bowed stringed instrument it is well known for its sonorous, brightness, cheerfulness and vivid character. It is the presided instrument in Chinese national orchestra.
Sheng is the first Chinese wind instrument that uses reed. It has been in the Chinese music history for over three thousand years.
The sound is produced by blowing air into the instrument to vibrate the reed and the sound comes though the pipes. The sound is soft and elegant, great for harmony.
Ruan comes in three sizes, big, medium and small. It is a lute with a circular body and 4 strings. Ruan works as a solo instrument as well as an ensemble. The sound is often describe as rich and calming.
Bawu is a reed instrument. The sound of Bawu is unique. Some describe it as “weeping and complaining”. It is often used to express the emotion of memories in music.
